So, gas or electric? Both varieties of this important kitchen appliance are reliable and offer consistent, even heat sources. Both come equipped with many helpful features and options to make life in the kitchen easier and more efficient.

Electric ranges are the most popular style of range available for a few reasons: they are the least expensive to buy and electricity is more widely available than gas as a reliable power source. You can depend on most electric models to provide consistently good performance, including even heating and helpful, flexible features for multiple cooking purposes. Newer electric ranges models feature a smooth top of ceramic glass with electric elements sealed beneath the solid surface.

Some gas ranges include special burners that provide cooking flexibility, like fast, high-output heat for quick boiling and searing, or burners that hold a gentle, consistent simmer for liquids and sauces. Many models feature sealed gas burners, which make clean up easier by keeping spills on the surface and preventing foods from becoming trapped under the burner. Typically, gas ranges have a higher purchase price than comparable electric models. Gas ranges and cooktops have a visible cooking flame and a wide range of temperature settings.

CooktopElectric and gas cooktops offer many of the same features: flexible surface heat with high-output burners for fast boiling and searing, and glass enamel surfaces for easy cleaning. Both electric and gas models feature downdraft designs or self-ventilation systems that do not require a hood for ventilation.

Sticky Messes on the Stove

Believe it or not, most messes on the stovetop can be easily cleaned with plain hot water and a little dish detergent. Put away the smelly spray-type cleaning products. The secret is allowing the soap and hot water some time to penetrate the mess. Wet a sponge with hot water and detergent and apply it to the whole dirty surface, wiping what is loose. Leave it wet with the water and soap. Now just walk away and do something else. Wait at least five or ten minutes and you will then be able to easily remove the mess with very little effort and scrubbing.
